The Official Languages Act, 1963 is an act of the Parliament of India that governs the use of official languages in India. The act was enacted on 26 January 1963 and came into effect on 26 January 1965. It provides for the use of Hindi and English as the official languages of the Union and for the use of Hindi as the official language of the states and union territories.
