The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary award in India. It is awarded annually by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded in 1961 by the industrialist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain. The award is given to an Indian writer for an outstanding contribution to literature. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs. 11 lakhs, a citation, and a bronze replica of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of knowledge and wisdom.
