The Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle was signed on October 18, 1748, to end the War of the Austrian Succession. The war had begun in 1740 when Prussia invaded Silesia, a province of Austria. The treaty restored most of the territories that had been conquered during the war, and it confirmed the Pragmatic Sanction of 1713, which guaranteed the indivisibility of the Habsburg monarchy.
