The Peace of Westphalia was a series of peace treaties signed between 1648 and 1649 that ended the Thirty Years' War, one of the most destructive conflicts in European history. The treaties established the principle of cuius regio, eius religio, which allowed each prince of the Holy Roman Empire to determine the religion of his subjects. They also recognized the independence of the Dutch Republic and Switzerland from the Holy Roman Empire.
