The Indian National Security Guard (NSG) was established in 1984 as a federal contingency force to deal with terrorist activities and hijackings.

The NSG consists of the Special Action Group (SAG), Special Rangers Group (SRG), and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS). There is no component called National Security Group (NSG).

The first major operation undertaken by the NSG was Operation Blue Star, which was launched in 1984 to flush out Sikh militants from the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Operation Black Thunder was carried out by the NSG in Amritsar in 1988 to neutralize Sikh militants who had occupied the Golden Temple.

Operation Black Tornado was launched by the NSG in 1999 to rescue hostages from a hijacked Indian Airlines plane in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

Operation Red Fort was carried out by the NSG in Delhi in 2000 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked the Red Fort.

Operation Taj Mahal was launched by the NSG in 2008 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai.

Operation Pathankot was carried out by the NSG in Pathankot in 2016 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked an Indian Air Force base.

Operation Sunjuwan was launched by the NSG in 2018 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked the Sunjuwan Army Camp in Jammu and Kashmir.

Operation Pulwama was carried out by the NSG in Pulwama in 2019 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy.

Operation Nagrota was launched by the NSG in 2019 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked the Nagrota Army Camp in Jammu and Kashmir.

Operation Handwara was carried out by the NSG in Handwara in 2020 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked a police station.

Operation Kathua was launched by the NSG in 2021 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked the Kathua Police Station in Jammu and Kashmir.

Operation Rajouri was carried out by the NSG in Rajouri in 2021 to neutralize terrorists who had attacked a military camp.
