Davangere is called as Manchester of Karnataka. It is called so due to its numerous cotton mills, many of which were of national and international repute. Availability of cotton led to the establishment of many cotton mills in the city. 

The agro-based industry includes industries related to textiles, sugar, paper and vegetable oil. These industries use agricultural products as their raw materials.

Visvesvaraya Iron and Steel Plant (VISL), formerly known as the Mysore Iron and Steel Industries Limited (MSIL), was established on January 18, 1923 by Sir M Visvesvaraya. It is now a steel plant under the jurisdiction of the Steel Authority of India Limited.

M.S.K. cotton mill, was set up in 1884 at Kalaburagi. Later, big cotton textile mills like Binny Mills and Minerva Mills of Bengaluru, K.R.Mill of Mysuru, Cotton Mill of Davanagere etc. were established before independence.

Karnataka Sugar Industry ranks 3rd in terms of its contribution of sugar in the total sugar production in the country. 

The first sugar factory in Karnataka was established in 1933. Since then there has been a steady growth of the industry and Karnataka has now emerged as one of the leading sugar producing states in the country.

Some cotton mills have been closed down more recently. The reasons for this are shortage of cotton, obsolete machines, lack of electricity supply, increasing production costs, stiff competition from synthetic fibre cloth etc.

Sugar industries produce molasses from the sugar cane processing. Molasses have 50 -55% concentration of sugar in the form of sucrose. This source of compound is used for preparing ethyl alcohol. 

From 1924 onwards, mining operations were started at Kemmanagundi and these yielded good quality of iron ore (58-60% iron content).[5] Limestone, which is used as a flux in the steel making process and dolomite which is used as a refractory material were mined from Bhadigunda mines, near Bhadravathi. Quartz, used in the manufacture of ferrosilicon and pig iron was mined from Bilikalbetta mines, fire clay used in the manufacture of refractories was mined at Shankaragudda hills and black clay used in the manufacture of cement was mined from Umblebylu fields near Bhadravathi.

Established in 1955, the Mill is located at Dandeli in Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka. The global quality paper produced by the Company serves the needs of innumerable industries in printing, writing, publishing, stationary, notebooks and packaging sectors in India, in the process contributing to the development of the nation.

The Mysore Sugar Company Ltd., (MYSUGAR), one of the oldest sugar companies established during 1933 is located in Mandya town in Karnataka State. The company is doing well for over half a century since its inception and has made significant contribution to the production of sugar.

Karnataka ranks fourth in the production of paper in the country. Karnataka produces 3.6 lakh tonnes of paper products per year. 

Karnataka produces 9,000 metric tons of mulberry silk of a total of 20,000 metric tons of mulberry silk produced in the country, thus contributing to nearly 45% of the country's total mulberry silk. In Karnataka, silk is mainly produced in the Mysore district. It is a patent registered product under KSIC.
