Itai-itai is the disease which was caused by the cadmium poisioning due to mining in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. This term was given by the locals for the severe pain the victims felt in the spine and the joints. It can also cause softening of bones and kidney failure. The disease was first described in the menopausal Japanese woman exposed to excessive levels of cadmium over their lifetimes. 

Due to the increase in the temperature, there can be incidental forests fires. The fires result in the burning of the vegetation and animals. This results in the formation of ash which contains the carbon particles. The fumes of the fire are released in the atmosphere causing air pollution. This is the natural source of air pollution.

MIC stands for methyl-isocyanate which is a gas and was leaked accidently in the Union Carbide subsidiary pesticide plant of Bhopal on 3rd dec, 1984 and led to the world's worst industrial disaster.

Burning of fossil fuels is a man-made source of air pollution. The various fossil fuels like coal, natural gas, fuel oil are burned by humans for obtaining heat which is used in the generation of electric power. This leads to increase in the concentration of gas emissions like carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide which enters the atmosphere and leads to air pollution. Large amounts of DDT are released into the air and on soil or water, when sprayed on crops and forests to control mosquitoes and other insects. Also, DDT may enter the atmosphere when it is evaporated from contaminated water and soil. DDT in the air may then be deposited on land or surface waters. In big cities, the most important source of these pollutants is the combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles.

The substances which are not normally present in the environment and are added by human beings including pesticides, insecticides, etc. are called Qualitative Pollutants.

Maximum atmospheric pollutants are concentrated at the 200m mark from the land surface.

Weeding is the process of removing unwanted plants in a crop. Once weedicides are applied, they contain harmful elements like DDT and many more which can leach into the soil and cause soil pollution and cause death of beneficial micro fauna present in the soil. These weedicides can also reach to the aquatic bodies by runoff water, causing algal blooms and thereby leading to the death of aquatic fauna.

Hydropower is mainly used in the generation of electricity. It is a renewable source of energy. It is a clean, domestic, and renewable source of energy. It provides inexpensive electricity and produces no pollution. Unlike fossil fuels, hydropower does not destroy water during the production of electricity.
