A car or a bus stand on rubber tyres. Rubber being an insulator, the body of car / bus stays separated or insulated from the Earth. So, it does not attract lightening. If we take shelter in a car / bus during lightening, there is no chance to be hit by the lightening.

It is safe to take shelter under short tress when you have no option, Lightning mostly gets attracted by tall targets.

During lightning make yourself smallest target by squat low on the ground and hands on your knees with your head between the hands. This is safe position.

During lightning switching off of electric lights does not cause any harm to us. Using phones with cord and plugging in electrical appliances may prove dangerous due to short circuiting  if a thunder strikes nearby.

It is safe to use mobile phones or cordless phones as there are no chance of electric shock due to lightning or thunder.

The lightning conductor should be taller than the walls of the building because lightning gets attracted to the taller targets.

The metal columns used during construction, electrical wires and water pipes, all are good conductor and well earthed hence provide earthing to the building.

Metals are good conductor of electricity and carry electric charges (both positive and negative) produced by lightning.

Metal pipe-lines for carrying water and electrical wires are good conductors and carry charges. If a lightning strikes the building, there may be chance of electric shocks getting spread through those due to leakage and this could be dangerous for life.

Hearing thunder is an alert to rush to a safer place. It could be dangerous to be out during thunderstorm.

Lightning get attracted towards the tallest target, in forest it is good idea to take shelter under short trees to protect yourself from lightning.

It is better to remain in car, as it provides earthing to charges without harming you.

Sometimes electric discharge can take place between the charged cloud and Earth. While passing over a tree or a tall building an opposite charge may be induced causing a lightning to strike the tree or a building and if the charge is large it may cause severe damage and may prove to be fatal.
