The CRPD was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 13, 2006.

As of March 2023, 193 countries have ratified the CRPD.

The CRPD aims to promote the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms by persons with disabilities, eliminate discrimination against them, and ensure that they have access to reasonable accommodations.

Respect for the evolving capacities of children with disabilities is not a general principle of the CRPD, but rather a specific provision related to the rights of children with disabilities.

The CRPD requires states to take all necessary measures to ensure that persons with disabilities have access to justice, including providing sign language interpreters and other communication aids, making courthouses and other legal facilities accessible, and training judges and other legal professionals on disability rights.

The Optional Protocol to the CRPD is a separate treaty that allows individuals and groups of individuals to file complaints with the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities if they believe their rights under the CRPD have been violated.

The Optional Protocol to the CRPD entered into force on May 3, 2014.

As of March 2023, 114 countries have ratified the Optional Protocol to the CRPD.

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is responsible for monitoring the implementation of the CRPD, receiving and considering complaints under the Optional Protocol, and providing guidance on the interpretation of the CRPD.

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has 18 members.

The Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is composed of experts in the field of disability, representatives of governments, and representatives of non-governmental organizations.

Members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities serve for a term of four years.

The Conference of States Parties to the CRPD is responsible for reviewing the implementation of the CRPD, adopting recommendations and guidelines on the implementation of the CRPD, and electing members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The Conference of States Parties to the CRPD meets every two years.

The CRPD is the first comprehensive international human rights treaty to address the rights of persons with disabilities. It has been ratified by a large number of countries and has led to significant improvements in the lives of persons with disabilities.
