The process by which water continually changes its form and circulates between oceans, atmosphere and the land is called the water cycle.

The rhythmic rise and fall of the ocean twice in a day is called a tide. Tides are caused by the strong gravitational pull exerted by the sun and the moon on the earth's surface.

Land and Sea breezes are basically caused by differential heating between land and sea.

Lake Superior, is the largest fresh water lake in the world. It is situated  on the United States/Canada border. It has the greatest surface area of 31,700 square miles.

The continental shelf is separated from the continental slope by the shelfedge or shelf-break at approximately 200 m depth. The gradient of the slope ($4^{\circ}$ on an average) is much higher than that of the continental rise $(1^{\circ})$. The continental shelf and slope together cover 15% of the total ocean floor, and the continental rise covers about 5%.

The submerged margins of continental mass extending from the shore to the first prominent break are sloped usually at a depth of about 120 m. Continental shelf occupies about 7.6% of the ocean floor. The width of the continental shelf varies considerably. The largest shelf the Siberian Shelf in the Arctic Ocean stretches to 1,500 kilometers in width.

The  Arctic Ocean has largest shelf that is the Siberian shelf. The continental shelf of the Siberian coasts of Russia are widest shelves which range in width from 480 km to 2,000 km. The continental shelfes are also quite wide to the north of Canada. 

The Earth is referred to as "the blue planet" because of the abundance of water on the planet. Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is comprised of water, producing a vivid blue color when viewed from space

A strait is a narrow waterway that connects two larger bodies of water. It can develop after water breaches an isthmus, which is a narrow strip of land connecting two bodies of water. A strait can also be caused by water overflowing onto eroded land.

An abyssal plain is an underwater plain on the deep ocean floor, usually found at depths between 3,000 metres and 6,000 metres. Lying between the foot of a continental rise and a mid-ocean ridge, abyssal plains cover more than 50% of the Earth’s surface. They are among the flattest, smoothest and least explored regions on Earth. 

The Suez Canal is an artificial sea-level waterway in Egypt, connecting the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea through the Isthmus of Suez. It was opened in November 1869 after 10 years of construction work and it allows ship transport between Europe and eastern Asia without navigation around Africa.

Submarine canyons originate either within continental slopes or on a continental shelf. They are rare on continental margins that have extremely steep continental slopes or escarpments. Submarine canyons are so called because they resemble canyons made by rivers on land.

Sunlight entering the water may travel about 1,000 meters into the ocean under the right conditions, but there is rarely any significant light beyond 200 meters.

The ocean is divided into three zones based on depth and light level. The upper 200 meters of the ocean is called the euphotic, or sunlight zone. This zone contains the vast majority of commercial fisheries and is home to many protected marine mammals and sea turtles.
